Study visit to the Silesian University of Technology November 6-10, 2023, Gliwice (Poland)
Silesian University of Technology – a partner of the PROMENT project, is one of the leading technical universities in Europe. Currently, over 17,000 students are enrolled in the university. It serves as a powerful educational and scientific center actively implementing project-oriented learning as an element of the learning-through-research strategy.
During the educational visit, PROMENT project participants learned more about the specifics of learning based on real industry problems and involving students in team projects. Project-oriented learning includes:
- Interdisciplinary approaches
- Practical experience at enterprises
- Teamwork
Each semester concludes with a research project and a public presentation. And, of course, participants gained insights into mentoring programs and the career office for students. Its main goal is to provide students with support and resources for career development and job search after graduation.
A special meeting with the accredited tutor Ph.D., Eng. Marcin LANDRAT was remarkable – a person who firmly believes that tutoring is not just a job; it is a calling and a way of life! “Only by understanding your student can you achieve more,” asserts Mr. Marcin.
They also learned about:
– Fundamental teaching methods
– Goals and tasks of different methods
– Qualities of a true tutor
Who, if not students, can better tell how to make learning more interesting and productive? Igor Ochojski, the head of the student organization responsible for exchange students at Silesian University of Technology, presented the organization’s activities.
• The “student-to-student” model is an important component of tutoring and mentoring, especially for exchange students.
• How to attract students to exchange programs, ensure their adaptation to local conditions, and which methods are better to use?
• Involving the younger generation in shaping the future is crucial.
Professor Anna Chrobok shared insights into mentoring programs initiated by the university in high school, such as the “Spread Your Wings” mentoring program.
Another important aspect of education is the promotion and popularization of science and higher education. Professor Aleksandra Buczynska-Ziembinska inspired with ideas on tools to engage a broad audience in scientific activities:
– Science Night
– Scientific games
– Three minutes thesis
– Science without borders, and much more
This educational visit proved to be a significant step for the exchange of knowledge and experience between the PROMENT team and Silesian University of Technology. Participants express sincere gratitude for the hospitality and the unique opportunity to delve into the unparalleled world of mentoring and tutoring.
